About Guesthouse Mikael

Guesthouse Mikael is a small, family-owned guesthouse in the centre of Höfn í Hornafirði, on Iceland's southeast coast. It has eight rooms, and it is a self check-in house: there is no reception desk, and guests let themselves in with a code, so arrival time is flexible.

The house

The guesthouse occupies a former family home built nearly a hundred years ago. It is spread over two floors, and because the building is old, no two rooms are quite the same size or shape. That is part of its character rather than something we have tried to design away. The upper floor is reached by stairs only, so if stairs are difficult, ask for a ground-floor room when you book.

The atmosphere is relaxed and home-like. Guests share a living and dining room with comfortable seating and board games, and a small kitchenette for preparing a simple meal. Parking is free, directly in front of the house, with no need to reserve a space.

The rooms

There are eight rooms in three types. All sizes below exclude the private bathroom.

Every room has a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, its own Nespresso machine with complimentary coffee, parquet floors, a flatscreen TV, a hairdryer, fresh towels and free Wi-Fi. The windows do not have a view.

Where it is

The house is a two-minute walk from the harbour. The swimming pool is about 400 metres away, the grocery store and a self-service laundromat about 500 metres, and most of Höfn's restaurants are within walking distance.

Höfn is a common overnight stop for travellers driving Iceland's Ring Road, and a practical base for Vatnajökull, Jökulsárlón and the East Fjords. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach are about 80 km away, roughly an hour by car. Vestrahorn at Stokksnes is 17 km, and the Hoffell hot tubs 20 km.
